In the year of , the world changed. Like, a lot. I am assuming most of our readers will know why. Japan is awesome. But anywhere gets a bit boring for more than a few months when you are totally alone.

One thing that I did was while living in Japan was visit retro game stores. It was here I started putting together the idea that I wanted to pursue my lifelong dream of making video games.

I had dabbled in emulation a bit here and there throughout my adult life. Mostly some Super Mario Bros. Robotnics Mean Bean Machine. If anybody out there is interested in emulating some of their favorite retro video games, I can tell you from first hand experience… there are a lot of options!

When it comes to video game emulation, there are essentially two ways to go: console specific programs and all-in-one programs. The all-in-one solutions typically cover some of the basics, which will typically be some of the earlier consoles.

So which programs are the best for retro game emulation on the PC? We did the research to save you some time so you can get straight to playing your favorite retro games. The Super Nintendo console has one of the strongest collections of retro games. It is easily one of the most sought out consoles for retro gaming fans looking to revisit their childhood, so some of you may not be surprised to see it on our best emulators for PC list.

For gamers who do not need a lot of extra features and just want to get straight to the fun, Snes9x is a SNES and Super Famicom focused emulation program that has been around for a very long time.

Providing the ability to play nearly every one of the titles from the Super Nintendo catalog, including some that were only ever released in Japan, Snes9x opens up a bunch of new doors for retro gamers with an SNES itch to scratch. If you need something to jog your memory, check out our list of the best snes games of all time.

Some of us still remember computers before Microsoft Windows. Yes people… there were computers before Microsoft Windows was even a thing. It was weird, it was confusing. But if you could find your way around the file system, you sometimes would find random games that came preloaded onto the computer.

I remember specifically digging through every box that came with the computer to locate every single floppy disk in hopes of finding new games. I felt like I was doing something naughty! Those are some of my earliest gaming memories. Those are the kind of magical feelings I have been chasing my entire life. For gamers hoping to revisit those classic games, and do not have those retro PCs laying around… DOSBox has got you covered! This one is for the arcade heads. No parents, no school.

Just a slice of pizza, a cup of soda, and a pocket full of quarter to play as many games as you could. FinalBurn Alpha is an all-in-one type emulation program aimed at the arcade cabinet platforms. While most of these platforms are not notoriously difficult to emulate many of the best retro handhelds can do it now , they are known for being notoriously fun to play. And if you are a gamer who is looking for arcade specific titles, there is no better place to look than FinalBurn Alpha.

The Sony PSP is one of the most popular handheld consoles, even today. It has seen quite a surge in popularity due to its ability to be modified and run emulation itself. But for gamers, like me, who do not own one, and would like to experience some of the incredible games in its massive library, PPSSPP comes to the rescue.

It took the number one spot on our list of the best PSP emulators , and for good reason. The team behind the legendary open source emulator still updates it to this day. Check out our giant list of the best PSP games and start picking your favorites! The Nintendo DS is the most popular handheld console of all time… and also notoriously difficult to emulate.

And for good reason… it has two screens! It is not necessarily that it is impossible to emulate the hardware performance, it just becomes difficult to show both display outputs at once and make it make sense. Recent retro handheld consoles, such as the Anbernic RGMP can emulate Nintendo DS games decent at times, but then you are forced to jump between the two screens, or just show both very small at the same time.

So, perhaps home PC emulation for Nintendo DS is the best option, because you can make use of a much larger screen. So which emulator is widely considered the best for Nintendo DS?

Having trouble remembering some of the best DS games to play? Check out our list of the best selling Nintendo DS games. You know what console was the only console to sell better than the Nintendo DS? The Playstation 2. As the most popular video game console of all time, there are sure to be a lot of gamers out there eager to revisit the games offered for the console. And so it goes for eternity.

As you start to get into what is known as the sixth-generation of consoles PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube emulation starts to get exponentially complicated. Not impossible… but tough.

But there have been some breakthroughs and successes in that endeavor. Having been in development since around the time that the PS2 was released, the PCSX2 emulator has made some giant advances in its 20 year history.. So why not give it a go, and check out our list of the best selling PS2 games of all time. I personally would recommend the 9 game on that list, which is one of my favorite games of all time!

So this one will surely be his speed. As the very first console to start the previously mentioned sixth-generation of gaming consoles, the Sega Dreamcast felt like a glimpse into the future to gamers coming from the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis. And while there were only games ever released for the console, the Dreamcast was certainly not lacking in quality titles.

Just take a look at our huge list of the best Dreamcast games of all time if you need reminding. And with Dreamcast exclusives like Cannon Spike, Project Justice, and Illbleed… there are sure to be a ton of fans eager to jump back in. Taking the number one spot on our full list of best Dreamcast emulators , Redream is hard to beat for Dreamcast emulation.

Prefer your Dreamcast games on the go? Check out the Ayn Odin , which can play them quite well! It has taken a long time for programmers to reverse engineer what Nintendo has done to intentionally keep us out. Dolphin Emulator was the first emulator to successfully run GameCube games back in ! But it took many years for bit emulation to become anything worthwhile.

If you want an easy all-in-one solution for retro game emulation… one of the best solutions is LaunchBox. An easy way to organize your game collection all in one place. Everything comes prepackaged, all emulators are built in, and your entire game library is presented in one easy interface. Probably the most well known all-in-one emulator, and for good reason, number 1 on our best emulators for PC list. Like LaunchBox, all emulators are built right into RetroArch.

And the Playstation 3 style interface will feel right at home to experienced gamers. And that is why it takes the number one spot on our list of the best emulators for PC. Anthony has been a video game lover ever since he can remember. He became a fulltime nomad in , living throughout most of Asia. He focused his passion in retro gaming and began creating a game for the Game Boy Color while living in Nara, Japan during the pandemic. He is now in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he spends most of his time gaming, going on long walks and meeting as many stray dogs as possible.

What you may not know is that I was living in Japan at the time. Moral of the story… I needed something to do. I started to shift my time and energy back into gaming. The first thing I did was start to research emulation. But now I was determined to really put some serious effort into my gaming. And when you start getting into more modern consoles, you will need a more focused program. Here is our list of the 10 best emulators for PC. Table of Contents. Official FinalBurn Alpha Website. Over the course of the past few decades, emulators on PC have skyrocketed in popularity. While emulators exist for all kinds of hardware configurations and operating systems, the gaming console variants are by far the most popular. An emulator essentially serves as a virtual version of whatever console its imitating. High-level emulators sacrifice accuracy for higher performance, while low-level emulators sacrifice performance for cutting-edge accuracy.

Many of the emulators on this list trend closer to high-level emulation, but a few of the cores in RetroArch are actually low-level emulation of older consoles. Ideally, you want a decently-strong PC and suitable controllers. The precedent that confirmed the legality of emulators can be found in two court cases from the late 90s and early s. Specifically, the fight was between Sony and two PlayStation 1 emulators, which Sony felt were infringing on their copyright and competing unfairly, especially since they could actually improve the visuals of emulated titles.

Instead, all they would need to do is purchase the emulation software and the games- or pirate them, a possibility made easier without the safeguards of official hardware. Ultimately, the court cases all concluded in favor of emulation, making it legitimate. However, the costs of legal proceedings and the small victories that Sony did manage ended up knocking the companies responsible out of the running. While emulation is legal, piracy is not.

You are responsible for legally obtaining and ripping your games for emulation. We are not responsible for how you acquire your games and what consequences may come with it. Pros Unparalleled compatibility and accuracy Great performance optimization and plentiful configuration options Compatibility with real Wii and GameCube input methods, via Bluetooth and the Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter, respectively Support for extensive modding, including custom textures, 60 FPS patches, and more.

Dolphin is our top pick, thanks to its unparalleled compatibility, extensive feature set, and stellar performance. The development of Dolphin started back in , and became an open source emulator in Since becoming open source, over people have contributed to the project on Github , and the emulator is always getting updates to add features, fix bugs, and improve performance.

While Dolphin started as a GameCube emulator, the architectural similarities between the GameCube and the Wii allowed Dolphin to expand to the latter console. This allowed Dolphin to be capable of playing Wii games at HD resolutions before the lifecycle of the console even ended, most famously the two Super Mario Galaxy games.

Pros Can emulate a ton of systems Only need to set up your controller once, if at all Controller and TV-friendly interface Plenty of customization options Emulation cores are easy to acquire, set up and access when combined into a single application Cons. There are cores for just about any retro system, and even a few modern systems, like the GameCube. You only need to configure your controller for the entire frontend once- in fact, XInput controllers are already perfectly-configured on launch!

Additionally, RetroArch boasts an interface that can be controlled entirely through a console controller, making it ideal for usage in the living room or on a TV, where you may not have access to a mouse and keyboard.

In particular, PS1 emulation and older are all superb in RetroArch and arguably better than any standalone solutions. We recommend against using recent systems in RetroArch, though. The Dolphin core in RetroArch is very outdated compared to the current standalone Dolphin builds, for instance.

PCSX2 is yet another modern granddaddy of the emulation scene, serving as an emulator for one of the most popular consoles of all time. Most important of these downsides is the plugin-based nature of this emulator. The only legal way to do this is by ripping it from your own PS2 console, which can take quite a while. Downloading a BIOs file is an alternative option, but is illegal, so we recommend against doing so.

That being said, this is still the best emulator for one of the best consoles of all time, the PlayStation 2. Pros Great performance, even on low-end systems Easy gamepad and graphical configuration Very high compatibility Open-source and cross-platform, making it playable on Android phones Cons.

If you want to learn how to get it up and running, click here to read an article I wrote on that for Racketboy. Pros Great performance Pretty solid compatibility for its age Generally-easy configuration Cons. Citra is where we really start hopping the threshold from older, more reliable emulators to modern and cutting-edge emulators. Citra emulates the Nintendo 3DS, which was released in and is still getting new releases to this day.

When it comes to emulation, this is a pretty young console to be tackling, especially to the degree of success that Citra enjoys. The biggest, best titles on the 3DS are all playable on Citra. However, there are a few downsides to Citra. Pros Insanely fast progression in development Surprisingly solid performance in many games Compatibility with original Wii U controllers Cons.

Cemu is the current cutting-edge darling of the emulation scene. Like Citra, Cemu exists to emulate a very modern console- the Wii U, which was released in late Unlike the 3DS, the Wii U is also a fully-fledged home console, which means that emulating it is a much more complex and performance-intensive task. Despite the young age of the console and the emulator, Cemu has been making unprecedented leaps in performance and stability since its launch a few years ago.

Of the emulators on this list aside from maybe RPCS3, listed below , Cemu has the highest overall performance requirements, with even some i5 processors struggling with the emulator on certain titles. However, it displays a truly impressive level of performance and compatibility for its age.

If you have a beefy PC and are willing to go through all the configuration nonsense, Cemu comes highly recommended. Pros Reasonably fast development progression Great performance in a few games Cons. That RPCS3 exists at all is a crowning achievement- the ability to emulate the PS3 and its obscure Cell architecture is genuinely incredible.

While fairly powerful when used well, the Cell architecture was a far cry from a PowerPC or x86 architecture common back then, making it much more difficult to develop for than the Wii, or even the original PS2.

For this reason, PS3 emulation was assumed impossible…. Until now. The RPCS3 emulator may be in relatively early stages, but its development team has proved beyond a doubt that the PS3 can be emulated. While the compatibility is limited at this stage in development, the Vulkan API has resulted in some surprisingly great performance numbers, and has made many mainstream games fully-playable in the emulator.

For most other folks, though, we recommend waiting until RPCS3 is a bit further along in development before using it on a regular basis. Your email address will not be published. Our Recommendation. Dolphin Emulator Nintendo Gamecube and Wii. RetroArch Almost Everything. Everyone Else. Citra Emulator Nintendo 3DS. Cemu Emulator Nintendo Wii U. Read Next. January 3, at pm. Matt Kitz says:.
